How Do Traditional Braces Work?

Traditional braces utilize two main components to straighten teeth: the brackets, which are small metal devices that are adhered to each individual tooth, and the archwires, which are threaded through each bracket on both the bottom and top arches. The archwires are tightened to place a strategic and gentle amount of force on the teeth to facilitate them shifting into a more aligned position.

Typically, braces can take between 12 and 24 months to fully align teeth and bites. For patients who have a bite problem like overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite, elastics may also be used during their treatment.

What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?

Braces can be used to address most orthodontic problems, including those that are more severe and can’t be addressed with clear aligners. Typically, our team at Waterford Dental Group recommends this treatment for patients experiencing the following concerns:

Bite Misalignment

If you suffer from open bite, crossbite, underbite, or overbite, braces are an incredibly effective solution. In many cases, patients can also experience relief from associated conditions to their bite misalignment, like TMJ disorder and bruxism (nightly teeth grinding and clenching), following their braces treatment.

Crowded & Crooked Teeth

While minor crowding may not always necessitate the need for braces, severe crowding can increase the risk of developing common oral health problems like cavities and gum disease, ultimately affecting the longevity of your smile. This is because the nooks and crevices created by overlapping teeth make it hard to brush and floss. Braces can bring teeth into alignment to establish harmony to the smile.

Gapped Teeth

Gaps between teeth are more of an aesthetic flaw, but for some patients, this orthodontic concern can have a deep impact on confidence. Braces can close the gaps within the arch to allow all teeth to lay flush next to each other, bringing symmetry to the smile.

Caring for Your Braces

Braces can pose some unique challenges to maintaining good at-home oral hygiene. Our team is always here to help if you have any questions, but we typically recommend following these helpful tips to maintain your braces:

  • Avoid eating foods that are hard, sticky, or excessively chewy.
  • Wear a protective mouthguard while playing sports.
  • Brush your teeth, being sure to clean around each bracket, for a full two minutes after each meal.
  • Floss using a water flosser multiple times throughout the day.
  • Prioritize dental hygiene and adjustment appointments with your dentist in Dublin to stay on top of your treatment.
