Invisalign® Clear Aligners

A Waterford Dental Group dental patient puts the Invisalign® Clear Aligner tray into their mouth.
When your teeth are crooked, it can seriously impact the quality of your smile, diminishing your confidence. While this is a major issue for many people, crooked teeth cause more aesthetic problems. Crooked teeth can have a serious impact on your oral health, increasing your risk for tooth decay, tooth breakage, gum disease, TMJ disorder, and more. For years, the only orthodontic solution for correcting crooked teeth was with metal braces. At Waterford Dental Group, we provide you with an alternative with Invisalign.

Traditional Orthodontics & Braces

Metal braces have been used for decades by orthodontists to correct misaligned teeth. Braces use metal brackets and wires to move and stabilize your teeth. The wires are responsible for the bulk of the work. They are anchored at the back teeth with metal bands and are attached to the brackets, which are bonded to the front surface of each tooth, using an elastic O-ring. While this treatment is highly effective, the brackets and wires are highly visible. Braces have to be adjusted about once a month. They can cause discomfort beyond the adjustments, with the brackets rubbing the soft tissues of your mouth. Treatment can also take several years.

The Invisalign® Advantage

Invisalign is an alternative treatment to traditional braces. Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners to move your crooked teeth into proper alignment. These aligners, which are made from digital impressions, are worn over your teeth, disappearing from view when they are set in place. Unlike traditional braces, which are fixed into place on your teeth, Invisalign aligners are removable. However, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours every day to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time. The aligners should only be taken out to eat and to brush your teeth, and they should be put back in place right after.

How Invisalign® Works

Invisalign moves your teeth gradually into proper alignment using a series of aligners. Each set of aligners is made to be worn for two weeks at a time, and then replaced with the next set. Each new set is slightly different from the one before it. Depending upon the length of your treatment, you will go through anywhere from 18 to 30 sets of aligners. Instead of metal wires moving your teeth, the plastic of the aligners is responsible for the movement of your teeth. The plastic puts gentle pressure on your teeth, which then puts pressure on the periodontal ligaments. The ligaments widen, which loosens the teeth. The plastic then moves the teeth into alignment. Once the teeth are properly aligned, the aligners help to stabilize them. When your treatment is complete, you are provided with a retainer to help you maintain your beautiful new smile.

The Benefits of Invisalign®

There are numerous benefits associated with Invisalign.
•  Invisible Treatment: You do not have to deal with a shiny metal smile. Your aligners are completely clear, and no one will know they are there.
•  Fewer Office Visits: You are provided with several sets of aligners at once, and your visits are spaced out further than with traditional treatment.
•  Shorter Treatment Time: Treatment times with Invisalign typically range from 9 to 15 months, as opposed to 2 to 3 years with traditional braces. Many patients achieve their new smile in less than a year with Invisalign.
•  An Easier Routine: You can eat all of your favorite foods without restriction, your oral care routine is easier, and Invisalign aligners are more comfortable than traditional metal braces.

Aligners are clear and look similar to tooth-whitening trays, but are custom-made to fit better while moving teeth. Some orthodontists and dentists have referred to them as "contact lenses for teeth."
