How are Extractions So Traumatic For Your Mouth?

Teeth Extraction Waterford Dental Group CA 94568-4603There are times when one or more of your teeth will need to be removed for different reasons. Perhaps you are a teenager or young adult that needs wisdom teeth extracted or you have a cracked tooth that is beyond repair.

If you need to have a tooth removed, the extraction can be very traumatic for your mouth and you need to care for the area, following our instructions carefully.

Why is an Extraction Needed?

There can be several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Wisdom teeth are usually impacted or blocked from surfacing, causing pain and movement of other teeth around them, so we will recommend they get taken out.

A tooth extraction can also happen when there is decay that cannot save it or breakage from trauma to the area, for example when playing a contact sport. A tooth extraction will only happen when no other treatment options can be used to save your tooth. We want you to keep your teeth for as long as possible and even with a severely broken tooth, there are ways we can rescue that piece.

Why is an Extraction Traumatic?

Removing a tooth causes trauma not only in your mouth, but in your mind. Having a missing tooth, especially one that is visible in the front of your mouth, can make you self-conscious and prevent you from speaking or smiling.

Also, the process itself can be traumatic to your mouth, especially for adults, because it can mean the tooth has to be broken down into pieces before it can be completely removed. If you need a more complex surgery, you will, mostly likely, be put to sleep during the procedure.

The recovery from a tooth extraction should take a couple of weeks if you follow all the instructions carefully and watch out for signs of infection. You will be given a prescription to manage pain after the surgery and be advised of other ways in which to stay as comfortable as possible.
