Have you ever sat there, trying really hard to focus on a small task, only to realize later you were clenching down on your teeth at the time? If so, then you may have caused some damage to your teeth.
Doing this once is not usually a problem, but most people who do it once, do it without realizing it a lot more often. This activity is called Bruxism. It is when you clench, and often grind, your teeth. It is not a healthy habit to have.
Clenching Your Teeth is Never a Good Idea
Most people who clench their teeth, do it without ever consciously thinking about it. It is a habit, and done out of reflex. However, it can quickly damage your teeth, especially since you do not always realize you are doing it.
It is normally done out of focus or frustration. When you are trying to focus on a minute task where you need no distractions, it can be easy to clench down on your teeth without realizing it.
After all, all of your focus is on the task at hand. It can also be easy to do when you are under a lot of stress. Most people who clench like this, also do it in their sleep. This makes it nearly impossible to stop, since you are not awake to stop the habit in the first place.
Thankfully, if you do notice that you are clenching your teeth, it is time to come in and see us for help because we have treatment options. You do not have to worry about damaging your teeth any longer.
Once you get bruxism diagnosed, you can figure out what treatment is going to work best. We often see great results with oral appliances that you wear during your sleep, but that is not the only option at our disposal.
